Guess What Broke This Time…

I had a pretty awesome childhood.  We camped and rode dirt bikes and hiked.  We drove through woods and over mountains.  Good stuff.  So, we try to do the same for our kids.

This weekend we brought them to the largest lake in New Jersey.  The excitement was two-fold: 1) It is the largest lake in our state.  2) It is currently frozen solid.

The oldest boys were out of the car and on the bank before we’d zipped the little guy’s coat.  When we caught up to them they were already standing on the ice.  Not only was the ice under their feet a different color, it was wet.  And then I heard the cracking sound…

Before...

Notice, on the right, that big crack in the ice?  That should have been a clue to stop walking…

...After

That’s right, we broke Lake Hopatcong…

(In case you’re worried–only one of them fell in, the water was only inches deep and he complained more about having to leave early than he did about being cold.  So, all-in-all, not a bad outing.)
